THE CARGILL CONNECTION, February 2010

Dear Friends and Supporters,

In January, Education Week released the results of its annual "Quality Counts" report. Texas received a perfect score of 100 for curriculum development – this is a crucial area over which the State Board of Education has authority. (See http://www.edweek.org/ew/qc/2010/17src.h29.html.)  This recognition plus positive feedback from teachers emphasizes the impact of our hard work on curriculum standards.

For SBOE conservatives, this accomplishment has not come easily. In developing curriculum standards for every subject in grades K-12, there has been much opposition to traditional values and methods of teaching.  Currently the SBOE is overseeing the revision of the social studies curriculum standards.

I grew up hearing stories about the sacrifices made for our freedom because my father fought in WWII and in Korea.  Our students must learn about the sacrifices that our forefathers made for them, and the classroom may be the only place where they hear this!  It is critical that students learn about our Founding Fathers, citizenship, patriotism, key historical documents such as the Magna Carta, the Declaration, the Federalist Papers, and the U.S. Constitution.  I also support students learning about free enterprise and how America is a very special country - it is exceptional and it is a privilege to live here.

Unfortunately the media has given reports on this issue that are either outdated or incorrect.  Daniel Boone, Nathan Hale, George Patton, and Davy Crockett.were reinstated to the curriculum several weeks ago (after the social studies work groups unwisely took them out).  “Global citizen” is out and “American” is back in.  Christmas was put back in the standards quickly.  For more information, please scroll down to an informative article written by our chairman, Gail Lowe.

We still have much work to do!  Strong conservatives who will vote to conserve American history, tradition, and values must be elected to the Board.  Please help educate your family and friends on this issue.  Look under “Action Items” for my recommendations on SBOE races.   Be sure you make it to the polls during early voting or on Election Day, March 2nd.

ACTION ITEMS:

Item 1.  The Texas State Board of Education elections are one of the most important Republican primary elections this year.  Texas is the largest purchaser of textbooks in the United States; therefore publishers use what is in the state curriculum standards to determine the content of the textbooks.  The SBOE oversees these curriculum standards and votes on the content that is covered in Texas classrooms (and therefore content covered in the textbooks).

Below are three conservative Republicans who are running against well-funded more liberal Republican opponents for the State Board of Education.  Please spread the word to your friends and family to vote for the sake of our children!

KEN MERCER, District 5: www.VoteKenMercer.com

McLeroy served as chair of the SBOE.  Don represents Anderson, Brazos, Camp, Cherokee, Delta, Falls, Fannin, Franklin, Freestone, Grimes, Henderson, Hopkins, Houston, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar,Leon, Limestone, Madison, Navarro, Rains, Red River, Robertson, Titus, Upshur, Van Zandt, Walker, and Wood counties, as well as parts of Collin County.

BRIAN RUSSELL: www.BrianRussell.net
